Found your blog while trying to figure...Hey there. Found your blog while trying to figure out why my son's math class is setting him BACK, instead of moving him forward. I am so frustrated, and both sad, AND happy to see that I am not alone in this.

Example: He is in third grade and has been able to subtract things like 100-72 in his head, for at least two years. Last year, we (his parents) taught him how to line it up with the 100 above the 72 and subtract out by hand. THIS year, he is learning how to do it, but has to draw lines from one part of one number to one part of the other number and come up with a partial answer, and then do the same with the other parts of the numbers and get another part of the answer and then put them togther. This is called "showing your work"

What?

Yeah.

now, my kid who could add and subtract 2 or 3 numbers IN HIS HEAD, sits in front of his homework and cries and even gets his answers wrong, and talks about how he isn't "smart".

And that is just the tip of the iceberg, with math this year.

Losing my mind, and totally seeing why people choose to homeschool their children!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33353812.post-10310857387224914942009-09-30T11:42:13.373-04:002009-09-30T11:42:13.373-04:00Well, I figured out how to do subtraction that way...Well, I figured out how to do subtraction that way on my own a million years ago but they certainly didn't teach it in school. Sounds like a great way to get them to get all mixed up.Lisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04329601656633314983noreply@blogger.com
