We're not all victims

Rosa Brooks said it, Kevin Drum agrees, and so do I.

We're not all victims

I hate to be callous, but the VT shootings had about as much effect on my life as these murders.

I feel for the families and I can't imagine how they must feel, but its their suffering, not ours.

I will go even further and state that 9/11 didn't effect my life, except of course for longer lines at the airport and that whole going to war thing.

I would much rather read about Alberto Gonzales in the hot seat, and the Reading First hearings.

Good post, Rory -- a lot of people have been affected either directly or indirectly by both of these tragedies, of course, but many who have extraordinarily tenuous connections claim trauma as a result.

There are a lot of policy effects, of course, but those are usually less personal.

It's pretty amazing what some will stoop to in using tragedy to their own ends.
