Last Word

My absolutely last word on school integration (I hope). Why don't school districts just impliment a pure lottery system to school assignment? Everyone would have an absolutely equal chance of being screwed.

Where's the opportunity for overt displays of broadmindedness in a policy like that?

If it were the kids who were the focus of racial balance policies then there'd be some weight given to the harm that being shlepped an hour in each direction inflicts versus the good that might come from the policy. If such a cost/benefit analysis were important to the proponents of racial balance policies, those policy would be gone like a cool breeze.

The answer lies in the fifth and sixth words of your last sentence.
